Heartland Settles Last Breach Debt

Heartland Payment Systems, the Nassau Street-based processor of credit card transactions, has made its last settlement in connection with a 2008 security breach that put thousands of credit card accounts at risk. On September 7 the company agreed to pay $5 million to Discover.

Heartland fell victim to a criminal cybergang led by the now-notorious hacker Albert Gonzalez, who in March was sentenced to 20 years in prison for this and similar network intrusions affecting Heartland and numerous merchants.

Since the breach Heartland has paid out more than $150 million to deal with the suit, including a $4 million class action consumer suit, $26 million in legal fees, $41 million to MasterCard, and $60 million to Visa.
