Recruiters Like Rutgers University

Share post:

On Monday the Wall Street Journal today released a list of the top 25 undergraduate colleges in the country that corporate recruiters consider the best wellsprings of talent. Rutgers University was named No. 21 on the list. No other college in the state made the list.

Rutgers’ inclusion is indicative of employer preferences toward large, state-funded institutions, according to the rankings. Penn State was the top-ranked school on a list that featured a mere six private universities.

Cornell was the only Ivy League school to make the list, and such notable schools as Harvard, Princeton, and Stanford were not ranked.

The rankings were part of the Journal’s “Paths to Professions” package that also includes articles and advice to help high school students, new college students, and their parents plan for a major and a school that can yield a successful career.

Nearly 500 recruiters — whose companies hired approximately 43,000 new college graduates in the past year — were asked to choose from more than 100 top colleges and universities that they believe produce the highest caliber graduates.

The survey also ranks recruiters’ picks for the best schools by major, including accounting, business/economics, computer science, marketing/advertising, engineering, and finance.

Another key to recruiters’ decisions on the rankings seems to stem from internships. A quarter of the companies reported that they had hired former interns, and internships are a cornerstone in most public universities.
