Join the Princeton Britpop Choir

The inaugural season of the Princeton Britpop Choir launches with its first class on Thursday, March 13, fulfilling founder Bela Nakum’s dream of bringing together music lovers of all levels and backgrounds. Nakum’s hope is to create a supportive community where all can experience the joy of singing together in harmony. Members of the choir will meet on Thursday evenings from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the Princeton United Methodist Church, 7 Vandeventer Avenue, Princeton.

Though Nakum grew up in the greater Princeton area, she spent summers visiting her family in the United Kingdom and developed a love for British music. While her musical background is in classical choral music, she aims to combine her love of music, the cultures she grew up in, and her desire to create a supportive community — open to everyone from classically trained musicians to those with no experience.

“Whether you’re a veteran Britpop lover or someone who loves music of any kind looking to connect with others, this is for you,” Nakum says.

Each season, the choir will learn choral arrangements of four to six songs, culminating with an optional showcase on the last day of class. While Britpop classics by Oasis, Pulp, and Blur from the 1990s will form the foundation, the scope of the choir will be wide and will include pop songs from any era. Choir members will be encouraged to provide song suggestions, making it a true community experience.

YWCA Princeton Launches EmpowerU Summer Programs

YWCA Princeton has announced new summer programs for children ages 4 to 8. Under the revamped title Empower U, these dynamic programs are designed to foster creativity, curiosity, and collaboration, empowering children to explore new interests and develop valuable skills.

YWCA Princeton is also expanding its summer offerings to new locations, making it easier for families to participate in these enriching educational experiences. The new sites ensure that more students can take part in these transformative programs. This summer, students will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on learning through three unique programs:

Take a Bow: Summer Artist’s Lab. Students will collaborate to create and perform their own theater productions inspired by themes like Folk Tales, Musicals, Superheroes, and Fairytales, culminating in a recorded presentation for family and friends.

STEMtastic Summer. Young innovators will explore game design, engineering, and robotics through hands-on projects, building practical STEM skills in a supportive environment that encourages curiosity and creativity.

Cultural Kaleidoscope (6-8 year olds only). Students will explore a different country each week, discovering its food, folklore, and culture, while learning to embrace diversity and understand how cultures contribute to our shared community.

Sunny Days (3-5 year olds only). Sunny Days is a program that fosters creativity, skill development, and exploration in children through arts and crafts, outdoor games, and nature activities in a safe, fun environment.

“We’re excited to launch EmpowerU, a range of interactive and enriching summer program that fosters creativity, curiosity, and growth” said YWCA Princeton CEO Rose Wong. “By expanding access at three locations, we’re furthering our mission to support the whole child — ensuring every student has the opportunity to learn, explore, and thrive in a nurturing environment.”

Registration for Empower U is now open. Families are encouraged to sign up early to secure a spot for their child. Parents can register for individual weeks or the entire summer. For more information, including details about locations, pricing, and registration, visit www.ywcaprinceton.org/summer.

Interested parents can sign up for the YWCA’s childcare open house on Saturday, March 15, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. to learn more and tour one of its facilities.
