Mercer County Hosts Drug Take-Back Day
Mercer County Sheriff Jack Kemler announces the opportunity to dispose of unused and expired prescription drugs during the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, April 26.
The goal is to help residents rid their medicine cabinets of outdated and easily abused opioid painkillers and other unneeded prescription medications. Residents can quickly drive up and drop off any unused and expired prescription pills, with no questions asked, at the parking lot across from the Mercer County Administration Building, located at 640 South Broad Street in Trenton, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is both a nationwide and regional effort aimed at providing a safe, convenient, and responsible method for disposing of dangerous, unneeded, and outdated prescription pills from your household. “Removing unused and expired medications from your home can help prevent accidental overdose, misuse, and addiction,” said Kemler.
Proper disposal of old medications also reduces environmental risks, as medicines flushed down the drains could eventually enter local drinking water supplies. “Make it a point to round up your unused and expired prescriptions and help make our local communities safer and healthier,” added Sheriff Kemler.
This disposal event will collect vape pens and other e-cigarette devices only after the resident removes the batteries. The drug disposal event cannot accept syringes, sharp instruments, liquid medications, or solutions.
The Mercer County Sheriff’s Office, along with other law enforcement agencies in the region, conducts this program in collaboration with the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office. For more information, contact the Sheriff’s Office Programs Section at 609-278-7159.
Maker’s Place Holds ‘In Honor of Mom’ Fundraiser
When you make a donation to the Maker’s Place, a nonprofit diaper bank and neighborhood resource center in Trenton, in honor or in memory of a special woman in your life, you support a mother in Trenton. The Maker’s Place will acknowledge your honoree on the honor and memory wall on its website (www.makersplace.org/memorywall), letting them know that a contribution has been made in their honor to support Mercer County moms.
The Maker’s Place provides diapers, wipes, baby formula, feminine hygiene products, and mental health support programming to more than a thousand Trenton-area mothers and their families each year. No parent should have to decide whether or not they can afford to change a diaper for their baby, especially around Mother’s Day.
Learn how you can make a change at www.makersplace.org/inhonorofmom, or write to “The Maker’s Place” at P.O. Box 54, Trenton NJ 08601.
FOPOS Announces 2025 Photo Contest
The Friends of Princeton Open Space have announced the launch of its 10th annual Perspectives on Preservation photo contest.
Grab your camera (or iPhone) and come explore the beauty of the Mountain Lakes Preserve. Photos can be submitted through Sunday, October 12. Each year, photo entries showcase the diverse forms of beauty photographers find in and around the Billy Johnson Mountain Lakes Nature Preserve. The contest builds awareness of the Preserve’s role in protecting biodiversity and enhancing the quality of life in the Princeton community.
Entries will be judged on their aesthetic merit, creativity, and originality and how they help to celebrate the Mountain Lakes Open Space Area as a refuge for nature and visitors. One winning photograph will be chosen in each of the three categories and the winners will receive $100 in merchandise from REI. In addition to the winning photographs, approximately 20 photos from the submissions will be selected for FOPOS’s annual photo exhibition in December at the Mountain Lakes House.
Adult photographers (17 and over) are invited to submit up to three photographs of the Mountain Lakes Open Space Area, which comprises the Billy Johnson Mountain Lakes Nature Preserve, Mountain Lakes North, John Witherspoon Woods, Community Park North, Tusculum Preserve, Pettoranello Gardens, and the J. Seward Johnson, Sr. Trail & Boardwalk.
Student photographers (16 and under) are invited to compete in the contest to win gift cards from Princeton-based businesses jaZams, LiLLiPiES, and the bent spoon.
Photos for submission can be taken at any time of year during the past three years as long as they have not been submitted in a previous FOPOS photo contest.
