Rita Ludlum, 94, on November 4. She was an active member of the League of Women Voters for more than 50 years, serving as president in the early 1980s and as co-chair in 2008 – 2009. The organization created the Rita Ludlum Citizenship Award in her honor. She led the voter registration efforts for many years and until recently was active at the registration table at the farmer’s market in Skillman.
George E. Claffey Jr., 87, on November 10. A Ewing resident, he owned and operated the Giblon & Claffey Insurance Agency until he retired in 1995. In 1952 he signed a contract to play professional football with the Pittsburgh Steelers. In 1969, he was appointed by Governor Hughes to serve on the Sports Study Commission who was responsible for the NY Giants coming to New Jersey. He was past president of the Trenton Country Club as well as the Nassau Club. Services will be held Thursday, November 15, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 137 West Upper Ferry Road in West Trenton.
Reverend Alice Parker, 74, on November 4. In 1982 she participated in the creation of the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen, and became its first director. She established Lifeline Emergency Shelter in her home, and for more than 30 years sheltered 28 women and children at a time, providing food and clothing, and helping them find work and housing. In 2004 she was one of five people to receive an Onassis Award at the White House for outstanding volunteer work.
Jean C. Waropay, 82, on November 5. She was a supervisor of logistics at Digital Equipment in Princeton.
Alvia (Al) Swingle, 76, on November 5. Together with his wife, Patti, he owned and operated Al’s Sunoco in Princeton Junction for 50 years.
Dr. Francis C. Oglesby, 86, on November 3. He was an associate professor of mathematics at Princeton University for six years. He then served as a chief officer at Applied Logic, working on artificial intelligence before returning to teaching at Rider University.
