Though the Princeton Record Exchange has little competition in the area, it is one of 700 surviving independent record stores in the country. And on Saturday, April 17, the store will be one of several hundred taking part in the third annual Record Store Day celebrations.
Record Store Day was conceived in 2007 by a group of musicians and aficionados as a celebration of the culture surrounding indie record stores. The Record Exchange is holding a dual celebration, of the day itself and for its 30th birthday. The store is sponsoring live music outside the Princeton Library on Witherspoon Street, in conjunction with the library’s Earth Day celebration. Chris Harford with His Band of Changes, along with Dinner, will play between 2 and 4 p.m. Richard Barone, formerly of the Bongoes, will also play.
Record Exchange general manager Jon Lambert says Record Store Day will be the first of an eight-day celebration of the store’s birthday, and that the store will give away gift cards and prizes until the following weekend. For more information, visit www.prex.com or www.recordstoreday.com.
