Legal issues aren’t just for companies that have legal departments. Small businesses and their employees can just as easily become involved in situations where legal advice is required, especially when it comes to hiring and firing.
Although handling these complex issues may be tricky, knowing the landscape ahead of time can save a lot of trouble down the road. Nancy Mahony, a lawyer who served for 25 years as an attorney with the state, will give a free seminar on employment law and small businesses Thursday, January 9, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Hamilton Public Library. Mahony, who now has a private practice in Ewing, was a deputy attorney general and prosecuted employee claims of unlawful discrimination against employers. She was also a staff attorney in the Judiciary department, where she provided legal advice to managers on discipline and labor issues, wrote Equal Employment and Opportunity decisions that resolved employee complaints of unlawful discrimination in the workplace. She has also conducted discipline training for managers and served as a hearing officer in discipline and labor matters.
