Three properties on Patton Avenue belonging to the late architect Michael Graves have been donated to a university, but not the university that seems like the obvious choice, the New York Times reports.
In his will, the famed postmodern architect and designer of household goods left his residence, studio, and warehouse to Princeton University, where he was a professor from 1962 to 2001. However, among the conditions of accepting the gift were preserving the houses and using them for education. Princeton University said it could not meet those conditions.
But Kean University, where Graves spent his last years creating an architecture program, accepted the gift and has purchased the three properties, worth $3.2 million, for $20. Kean plans to use the warehouse as a museum, studio, and gathering place for seminars just as Graves did when he was alive.
