Princetel, an East State-Street based maker of fiber optic rotary joints, is the state’s first industrial building to earn the environmentally friendly LEED Platinum certification.
Rainwater storage tanks, solar panels, energy-efficient design, and natural materials all make the company’s 41,500 square-foot factory have as little impact on the environment as possible. Other measures that gave the building platinum LEED status include its location near public transportation, bike racks for employees, and the recycling of 97 percent of all construction waste.
The fact that the building was made from a converted warehouse also figured into the certification. The building even has “energy wheels” that make electricity from the outflow of air from the building.
LEED certification is a standard developed by the nonprofit U.S. Green Building Council and awarded to builders of environmentally friendly buildings. Platinum is the highest level of certification.
