Picture This: Photos with Voice
Competing with a whole slew of online photo labs, from
AOL’s photo processing partnership with Kodak to the soon-to-be launched
PhotoAmerica, Dotphoto is the latest project of entrepreneur Glenn
Paul (Princeton, Class of 1979), founder of (but no longer owner of)
Clancy Paul Computers.
Dotphoto serves digital camera users over the Internet with services
like Internet printing and archiving. Anyone with a digital camera
can upload their photos to the web and organize them in an album of
thumbnail images. Customers can choose their favorites and send them
off to be printed by MotoPhoto, a collaborator in the project. The
pictures arrive in the mail a few days later.
What differentiates Dotphoto is its voice-enabled digital photo processing
capabilities, says Stuart Ferguson, vice president of development,
and principal of Organizational Change Resources. “We are the
first and only photo processing site on the Internet that allows people
to put voice captions on their uploaded photos and create a presentation,”
says Ferguson (Northwood University, Class of 1979). “In our case,
a word is worth a thousand pictures — you have a chance to explain
how you felt when the photo was taken. Imagine if you could have had
your grandfather’s voice captured, not just his image.”
Originally called PhotosByNet (U.S. 1 August 18,1999), Dotphoto launched
its site on May 12 and now has eight employees. The company outsources
its web design to InfoFirst at 8 Wall Street. Ferguson says Dotphoto
has had customers since the day of launch.
