The Newgrange School of Princeton, a network of schools for special needs students, has appointed Tim Viands to head of schools and executive director.

Newgrange is made up of the Laurel School of Princeton on Mapleton Road, which specializes in assisting students with dyslexia or other related language-based learning differences; the Newgrange School of Hamilton on Olden Avenue, a state-approved resource for individuals with such learning challenges as autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, and dyslexia; and the Ann Robinowitz Education Center, also on Mapleton Road, which provides educational evaluations, dyslexia screening, tutoring, and professional development.

“After an extensive national search, we are thrilled to welcome Tim to the Newgrange family,” said Newgrange board president Ann Robinowitz. “A well-respected leader in education, Tim is committed to empowering young people who learn differently, and he’s a strong believer that professional development is integral to that mission.”

Viands said he plans to conduct outreach to other independent schools in New Jersey and Pennsylvania to identify individuals with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences. “In this increasingly diverse world of ours, it is essential to appreciate, accept and celebrate the differences of others — for there is so much more potential than what appears on the surface,” he said.

Viands earned a bachelor’s degree from Towson University and a master’s from Wesleyan University. Most recently, he was headmaster at Grand River Academy, an all-boys boarding school in Ohio.
