Negative Online Reviews: Are They Defamation?

If you are still hungry for the chance to hear a mentor break down a topic during break time, SCORE Princeton’s Lunch ‘N Learn shares how small business owners can reckon with an online reputation in “Negative Online Reviews – Do They Constitute Defamation?” on Tuesday, December 6, at noon.

The free event is hosted by attorney at law and self-described “subject matter expert” Randall Brett, who was profiled for an earlier Lunch ‘N Learn in U.S. 1’s September 14 issue, “Contracts Signed, Sealed, and Delivered for Lunchtime Learning.” Registration is available online at SCORE Princeton’s website, princeton.score.org.

As the SCORE Princeton website states, “We are living in the digital age and consumers use the internet to make a variety of decisions, including what products to buy and what professionals to hire. During their research, many savvy consumers go online to look at the reviews the business has received on local business directories.”

Public feedback on websites or search engines like Yelp and Google, the page continues, “can have a profound effect on the success of your business.” Brett, a former Chair of the New Jersey State Bar Association Solo and Small Firm Section with experience in “business law and commercial arrangements,” will help define the rights of an owner in this scenario.

Brett aims to first explain the legal differences between opinions, facts, and what constitutes defamation. His years of experience as a lawyer allow him to share the possible options for recourse on both the state and federal levels with attendees.

For those interested in getting even more knowledge and nourishment at the halfway point of the day, SCORE Princeton’s next Lunch N’ Learn, “Creating Winning Grant Proposals in December,” is described as “the last in a four-part series about the steps to take to start your own non-profit organization,” featuring presenter Marty Siederer.
