Looking for Work? Consider Boot Camp

The economy might be improving but there are still a lot of people out of work.

What makes things hard for the unemployed is that the rules for finding a job have changed since many last had to job hunt. More than ever, says Kevin Graham, principal at Princeton Retirement Planning & Wealth Management at 116 Village Boulevard, job seekers and career changers need to make sure their resumes are updated to show not their titles and years of services, but rather what skills and achievements they have to show for it.

Princeton Retirement Planning & Wealth Management and the Princeton Chamber will host the Career and Professional Boot Camp, a gathering for the unemployed and underemployed, on Thursday, June 17, at 11 a.m. at the Wyndham Princeton Forrestal Hotel. “I’ve come across and helped many clients, friends, and relatives through the roller coaster ride of being unemployed,” Graham says. “It’s emotionally stressful, not to mention financially trying.”

Graham, the coordinator of the event, says the idea for the boot camp started with a client who had been unemployed for almost a year. “It got me thinking on a larger scale about how I might be able to give back to the community,” he says. He found that similar-themed boot camps had been held in San Francisco and other cities and felt the idea would work here.

The boot camp, he says, is not a job fair, but rather a way to “introduce unemployed professionals and career changers to new ideas and serve as a way to meet fellow comrades in the job hunt.”

Graham says the goal of the boot camp “is to have the attendees leave in a better position than when they entered. An unemployed person can feel very isolated and alone. This event will give the attendees a place to share ideas, vent, and network with those who are in the same boat.”
