LDANJ Host Spring Conference & Expo

The Learning Disabilities Association of New Jersey (LDANJ) invites parents, educators, professionals, adults, and students to its spring conference and resource expo at The College of New Jersey Education Building on Saturday, May 6, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.. Register via EventBrite. Cost: $50; $25 for LDANJ members.

The day’s agenda includes a keynote discussion led by Hamilton-based ASAH’s executive director John J. Mulholland Jr. on “Individualized Transition Planning for Students with Complex Disabilities.” Founded in 1974, ASAH is a nonprofit serving private special education schools and agencies in New Jersey to ensure the highest standards of service for students and youth with disabilities.

Four sessions throughout the day, each consisting of multiple workshops, cover topics from pre-school through post-secondary levels including information on transitions planning, person centered approaches, executive function, dyslexia, social emotional learning, social skills, IEPs, and more.

Specific workshops include:

• “My Child’s Considered an Adult — What Now? Legal and Financial Considerations Beyond the IEP,” led by Michelle Scanlon, an estate and tax planning attorney with Norris McLaughlin, and Melissa Weisz, wealth advisor and associate partner with CI RegentAtlantic Private Wealth in Morristown.

• “Intersectional Transitions: A Focus on LGBTQ+ Specific Resources,” led by Joseph Hogan, an assistant professor of special education in the College of Education at Kean University.

• “Culturally Responsive Person Centered Planning,” led by Valentina Arango, a training and consultation specialist at The Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities.

• “Alternatives to Guardianship,” led by Peg Kinsell, the public policy director for the Statewide Parent Advocacy Network, New Jersey’s Parent Training and Information Center.

Additional information will be provided by the more than 25 vendors at the expo held during the lunch break. All attendees will also receive a conference journal with other helpful information.
