Is the Golf Club An Old Boys Club?

A Nassau Park law firm is suing the Plainfield Country Club for allegedly discriminating against women. Pellettieri, Rabstein & Altman is representing Liza Garrubbo, the club’s former golf champion, in a suit accusing the club of gender discrimination and retaliation. The lawsuit includes her husband, Joseph Garrubbo, who has been a member of the club for 30-plus years.

The suit alleges that the golfing world is a “bastion of white male supremacy” and that the Garrubbos suffered for standing up to it.

The Garrubbos contend that club leaders retaliated against the Garrubbos after Liza gave a speech about the status of women at the club and Joseph appointed his wife and another woman to a committee. The suit charges a club leader with leaving a hostile, raging voice mail on the couple’s answering machine asking Joseph to resign from the board of trustees.

The lawsuit alleges the club retaliated against the couple in various ways, ultimately leading to suspending Liza from the club.
