Inacom Goes Belly Up
Several dozen people in the Inacom office on Lenox
Drive found themselves without a job last week. With 5,000 employees
worldwide, and once the largest corporate reseller of computers,
Inacom
had tried to reshape itself as a technology services company.
Last week when Inacom filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy it shuttered
its doors as if it were a mere mom and pop store, leaving both its
workers and its clients out in the cold. Employees were instructed
by voice mail tapes from the home office in Atlanta to pick up
personal
property on Thursday, June 29, when Pinkerton guards would be on the
site. As for its high profile clients — many in the Fortune 1000
category — other companies are scrambling to pick up those
contracts.
“We are looking to assist previous Inacom customers,” says
Jack Chardi, product marketing manager of Alpha Microsystem, a Santa
Ana, California-based firm with a Cranbury-based help desk

Inacom owned ValCom, which at one point had taken over Clancy Paul
computers, the business founded by Glenn Paul (see story, page 47).
Paul eventually concluded that he could not make money in the retail
computer business, and the once deep-pocketed Inacom apparently
reached
the same reality as a reseller.
As reported by John Moore of www.smartpartnermag.com Inacom listed
assets of $956.6 million and debts of $560.7 million, including a
debt of $94 million to Compaq, which recently bought Inacom’s
distribution
units. Other top creditors are Computer Associates, Hewlett Packard,
Inacom’s former chairman William Fairfield (who claims $9 million),
Scient Corp. (a web integrator), and the Doral Golf Resort and Spa.
