Getting Grants

Everyone knows the government spends billions on research and technology programs, with awards going to major companies like Lockheed Martin and Fluor International. But it also spends about $1 billion a year on research and development contracts specifically for small businesses.

Now there is a chance for a small technology company to learn how to find and apply for these contracts.

The New Jersey Small Business Technology Commercialization program will host a workshop Friday, May 31, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. at Bowen Hall at Princeton University on how small businesses can write proposals to receive research grants through the Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer programs. Cost: $45, $60 after May 30. To register, visit www.NJSBDC.com/SciTech.

The half-day seminar will give participants an overview of the SBIR and STTR programs including how to find solicitations and write effective proposals that fit their businesses’ capabilities.

Businesses located in the state can also apply for eight free hours of proposal preparation assistance within a year of the program. At the seminar, companies will be able to get first-hand advice from someone whose job it is to give out SBIR contracts.

Steve Konsek, head of SBIR projects for the National Science Foundation will give an overview of the program and offer up to six 15-minute one-to-one appointments with company representatives after the seminar. To apply for a time slot, send a one-page NSF SBIR project summary (see the website for formatting requirements) to rgharmon@njsbdc.com.
