Do you want to know what America is thinking on key issues? Frank Newport, editor-in-chief of Gallup, the opinion polling firm, may be able to fill you in when he speaks at the annual meeting of the Princeton Historical Society on Wednesday, February 6, at 7 p.m.

Newport will speak on “The Insider’s Guide to America Today” at the Nassau Club, 6 Mercer Street. Visit www.princetonhistory.org to reserve seats.

A native of Fort Worth, Texas, Newport attended Baylor University from 1966 to 1970. After a stint in the military, he earned a doctorate in sociology from the University of Michigan. In 1987 he joined the opinion poll firm Tarrance, Hill, Newport & Ryan, which was bought by Gallup a year later. In 1991 Newport took over as Gallup’s editor-in-chief.

According to Newport, he and the 700 Gallup interviewers he oversees conduct 350,000 annual interviews plus inquiries in another 150 nations. As he puts it, “The poll is an invaluable tool for uncovering collective wisdom.”

In addition to his work at Gallup, Newport has a weekly radio show on NPR, “What Are We Thinking,” and WHYY-FM’s “Attitude Check.” He has written “Polling Matters: Why Leaders must listen to the Wisdom of the People” and co-authored “Winning the White House 2008: The Gallup Poll, Public Opinion, and the Presidency.” His latest book is “God is Alive and Well.”
