Export to Canada: Savone
D>Rick Savone, the new trade representative for
the Canadian Government Trade Office, has one of the classiest home
offices in town, on toney Westcott Road in Princeton. He arrived late
last year and is busy setting up new opportunities for the maple-leaf
style networking. He and Steve Richman, president of the
Canadian-American
Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey, will host Michael B.
Phillips,
the consul general of Canada, at a networking breakfast on Thursday,

with Canadian partners in high-tech sectors,” says Savone. “We
have been instrumental in finding leads for Canadian clients,
assisting
them with export opportunities, and partnering them for R&D
initiatives.”
A native of Ottawa, Ontario, Savone majored in economics and business
at McGill, and worked in government before being recruited by the
Canadian Foreign Service. He served in Algeria, where he was
responsible
for political and immigration programs, and came to Princeton this
year. Savone operates what is considered the satellite mission of
the Canadian Consulate General in New York
American exports to Canada in 1998 totaled $75 billion, and New Jersey
products accounted for $4 billion. Nearly one-fourth of American
exports
went to Canada in 1998. Since then, economic growth in Canada has
diversified and productivity has increased, all thanks to increased
productivity, higher consumer spending, and lower unemployment in
Canada.
Savone’s export/import efforts will concentrate on areas of
biotechnology,
information technology, and environmental technology. Significant
exports from New Jersey to Canada include the category of chemicals
and allied products, such as plastics, agricultural products
(including
orange juice and concentrates), personal and household goods
(including
books), transportation equipment, equipment and tools, and medical
equipment. To find the other appropriate products for exporting to
Canada, check the U.S. State Department website at
Richman, an attorney with Gallagher, Briody & Butler, and Savone will
stage a breakfast teleconference in April on “Border Challenges:
Penetrating the Canadian Market” and follow that up in June with
another breakfast on “Transportation Issues in and out of
Canada.”
Rutgers Center for Management Development offers
certificates
in human resource management and equal opportunity administration.
The HR certificate offers 21 workshops and requires nine workshops
taken within a five-year period. Workshops may also be taken singly.

Courses deal with job analysis, recruitment, selection, interviewing,
legal matters, strategic planning, performance appraisal, training,
benefits, avoiding litigation, attitudes survey, organizational

facilitating effective meetings, financial and statistical analysis,

Administrators of assisted living facilities must
complete
a 56-hour course and take a certification exam. Mercer County
Community
College offers this course in 10 evening sessions starting Monday,
March 13, or in five daytime sessions starting Wednesday, April 5.
In addition, two practicum days are required. The fee is $1,700. Call

Apartment managers can apply to win a prize as “best
on-site person of the year” from the New Jersey Apartment
Association.
Other best of the year categories include regional manager, property
manager, leasing consultant, or maintenance supervisor. The deadline
has been extended to March 20 for these categories: best website,
marketing plan, property renovation, management company, curb appeal,
best property (in two categories, built before 1976 and built between
1976 to 1994) and special needs or affordable housing.

categories.
