Barbara Gitenstein, president of the College of New Jersey, will speak at the New Jersey Alliance for Action’s “Building New Jersey’s Future: Higher Education Capital Construction” conference on Friday, June 8.
Gitenstein, pictured at right, will discuss her school’s capital efforts to address academic, student life, and asset renewal needs. The College of New Jersey is using various funding strategies including public-private partnerships, bonding, and self-funded capital fees.

In addition to Gitenstein, the conference features keynote speaker Rochelle Hendricks, state higher education secretary; Susan Cole, Montclair State University president; Richard McCormick, Rutgers University president; and Joel Bloom, NJIT president.
The Alliance is a nonprofit, nonpartisan statewide coalition of more than 2,500 business, labor, professional, academic, and government leaders. It is an advocate of investment in infrastructure for New Jersey’s economy, environment and quality of life.
Since its creation in 1974, it has worked with each New Jersey Governor, the cabinet, the Legislature and local governments, as well as its membership, to create funding and secure permits for road, bridge and rail improvements, water projects, school construction, aviation enhancements, shore preservation, business expansion and other key infrastructure investments.
Gitenstein has more than 30 years of experience as a college professor and administrator in both the public and private sectors. She came to TCNJ from Drake University where she served as provost and executive vice president. She is the first woman president in TCNJ’s 153-year history.
Gitenstein has served as a board member of the ING Investment Funds, and ING Mutual Funds; and is a past statewide chair of the New Jersey State Employee Charitable Campaign. She was was the recipient of the 2002 Woman of Distinction Award by the Girl Scouts of Delaware-Raritan Council, and was honored by the Executive Women of New Jersey at its 2002 Salute to the Policy Makers dinner for her contributions to the advancement of women in management and the profession.
Born in Florala, Alabama, Gitenstein earned a BA in English from Duke University and a PhD in English and American Literature from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
