In the urbanized core around Trenton, the Mercer County Planning Department is working with traffic officials from five agencies to plan for future traffic signal equipment and operations. Among the answers sought from this collaboration are whether coordinating corridors can reduce idling and congestion; if automated vehicles can work safely; and if traffic signals can work better.
The New Jersey Department of Transportation is working on these issues for State highways, but county and municipal signals are managed separately. To this end, Mercer County is inviting community input to identify problematic traffic signal operations, such as long waits with no cross traffic, lack of coordination, dim lighting, and inadequate pedestrian crossings.
Residents are invited to share feedback through an online survey, available through Friday, January 31. Responses will help the county prioritize improvements and explore better traffic management options for the region.
