John A. Smith has opened the Princeton office of a New York-based firm that offers virtual phone systems to small and mid-size businesses.
His firm, M5 Networks, has a product, called “Voice as a Service,” which allows clients to have all the features of a phone system without installing the hardware. “These clients will no longer have a phone system sitting in their closet with a dusty manual sitting on top of it,” says Smith.
Smith graduated from Rutgers University in 1987 with bachelors’ degrees in both information systems and business administration. He joined M5 Networks, a $25 million company, last spring.

Dr. Mark B. Levin, 61, on June 8. A Princeton resident, he was a partner in the Pediatric group in Princeton and was former president of the pediatrics department at the University Medical Center at Princeton.
Alexander Bothwell Sr., 74, on June 6. After retiring from DeLaval Turbine Company, he co-founded several businesses, including Gennello’s Fruit Produce and Deli in Hamilton, Bookkeeping Assistance, dvPayroll and HR, and Primepoint.
Donald C. Stuart III, 66, on June 4. A memorial service for the former editor and publisher of Town Topics newspaper will be held on Wednesday, June 18, at 3 p.m. at the Princeton University Chapel.
Jeffrey R. Lowe, 61, on June 3. He was a college advisor at Princeton High School.
Donald D. Jones, 56, on June 2. He was assistant dean of enrollment and student services at Mercer County Community College’s James Kearney campus.
Palmer Williams Sr., 76, on May 30. A West Windsor resident, he had been a managing director with Marsh & McLennan in New York City.
