Chamber Trade Fair Kicks Off The New Business Season
The Princeton Chamber is holding its annual business
trade fair in a new location this year. “It’s a spectacular venue,”
Kristin Appelget, president of the chamber, says of the Merrill
Lynch Conference Center, where the all-day trade fair takes place
on Wednesday, September 4, concurrent with the U.S. 1 technology showcase,
from 11a.m. to 5 p.m.
Part of the Merrill Lynch compound on Scudder Mills Road, the conference
center had been used almost exclusively for the financial services
company’s own training and events. With the downturn in the economy,
Merrill has started to invite other organizations to rent the space.
“It’s very airy, very green and open,” says Appelget, inviting
those who have not yet seen the conference center to drop by on September
4. The center uses a wide bridge to connect two buildings. The bridge’s
glass walls look out on gardens and ponds. During the trade fair,
exhibits will flow from a recreation area through the bridge and into
the space on the other side.
This year, between the U.S. 1 contingent and the Chamber, there will
be more than 90 exhibitors. “We’re sold out,” says Appelget.
Every exhibition space has been snapped up. Appleget, who has been
at her job for just a month, guesses that enthusiasm for the event
arises from a renewed appreciation of the importance of networking
in a still sagging economy.
Appleget says the date of the trade fair, just two days after Labor
Day, is a plus. It’s a chance to ease into the new business year after
the long week-end. “It gives people a great opportunity to have
another day not sitting in the office,” she says. “It’s a
way to get back to business in a refreshing way.”
Again this year, Renee Martin, owner of Forgery Forensics, is
on hand to analyze attendees’ handwriting. A popular draw, Martin
had nary a second to pause last year as those curious to find out
what their scrawls revealed about them flocked to her table. Another
popular feature of the annual event, the International Coffee, kicks
off the day. This year, John Bennett, managing director of Berlitz
International, speaks on “The International Language of Business.”
A buffet luncheon runs from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. (Cost: $33). The
keynote talk begins at 1 p.m., and this year is held in a room apart
from the dining room. The keynote speaker is Maxine Ballen,
president of the New Jersey Technology Council. She speaks on “New
Jersey Technology and You…Perfect Together.”
At 3 p.m., the U.S. 1 Newspaper Technology Showcase offers its free
panel discussion: Lisa Drakeman, CEO of Genmab, and Sidney
Pestka, founder of PBL Biomedical Laboratories, speak on “The
Quest for Cancer Cures.”
Throughout the day, in addition to the exhibits and panels, there
will be food tastings. Participating chefs and eateries include Panera,
Chevy’s, and the chef from Acorn Glen.
Exhibits open at 11 a.m., and there is no charge for the exhibits
or the talks. For information call 609-452-7000 or 609-520-1776.
