Five recently announced postgraduate programs —

at Rutgers, Rider, Stevens, Princeton University, and New York

University

— cater to full-time employees who want to attend classes at night

or on weekends. Two new undergraduate degrees — one for service

personnel offered through Thomas Edison State College, and one that

guarantees transfer from a two-year to a four-year college — are

also new, as are various certificates at Mercer County College.

(CMD) offers career development workshops and certificate programs

for organizations and professionals. These workshops are held three

to four times a year at the New Brunswick campus and at other

locations.

Labor Management Relations Workshop Series and CertificateProgram. Sixteen workshops include such subjects as”Introductionto Labor Law,” “Employee Discipline and GrievanceHandling,””Negotiation: Strategies for Mutual Gain,” “AdvancedTopicsin Arbitration,” and “Conflict Resolution.” Attend nineworkshops for certificate.Rutgers Leadership Development Series and Certificate Program1999. Eleven workshops for supervisors, team/work group leaders,and organizations. “From Follower to Leader: Mastering theTransitionto Supervisory and Team Leadership” is held eight times a year,next on June 4.Equal Employment Opportunity Workshop Series and CertificateProgram. Nine workshops are offered three to four times a year,including “Equal Opportunity Law and Lawful EmploymentPrograms,”covering the fundamentals of EEO law; “EEO and the Disabled;””How to Develop an Acceptable Affirmative Action Plan;””SexualHarassment on the Job;” “Lawful Performance Appraisal inWorkforce2000;” and “Managing Cultural Diversity in the Workplace.”Attend five workshops for certificate.The Human Resource Management Workshop Series and CertificateProgram. Meer, director, at 732-445-5590.Top Of PageRider’s New MBARider University’s College of Business Administration(CBA) has redesigned its Master of Business Administration program.Unlike traditional MBA programs that offer the generalist a genericbusiness knowledge, this new program is integrative, cross-functional,and provides team oriented experiences.”For many years most MBA students held non-business undergraduatedegrees and were moving into career paths that required businessskills,”says Mark Sandberg, CBA dean. “Now two-thirds of thestudentshave undergraduate business degrees. These students expect the MBAprogram to provide advanced, leading-edge knowledge and theopportunityto specialize.”Beginning September 1, the program revisions feature a reduction inmaximum credits from 57 to 51, a new core of 24 credits, a significantlevel of course integration in the advanced core, an expansion inthe number of elective credits from 12 to 15, and the addition ofdistinctively defined concentration options. The program minimum is30 credit hours for students with recent undergraduate degrees inbusiness.A six-credit module, customer focused management, integratesmanagement,marketing, and selected team and interpersonal skills. Anothersix-creditmodule will combine contemporary accounting, economics, and financetheory and practice into two integrated courses.Part-time tuition costs $420 per credit. Cost $900.Top Of PagePU: Engineering Masters with Real-World TrainingThe School of Engineering and Applied Science at Princeton Universityoffers real-world oriented instruction in technical and businessaspectsof engineering. This one-year program does not require a thesis andallows students to choose between a more technical track focused ona particular aspect of engineering, and an entrepreneurial managementtrack that mixes technical classes with business-oriented studiessuch as entrepreneurship, public policy, and international economics.Students may choose a “home base” in any one of fivedepartments– chemical engineering, civil engineering and operations research,computer science, electrical engineering, or mechanical and aerospaceengineering. For students with a managerial or entrepreneurial bent,four courses in the home department can be taken with fournon-technicalclasses throughout the university.The goal is to impart management and leadership skills along withadvanced training in applied technology, says Stuart Schwartz,director,who believes the program will benefit students interested in atechnicalconsulting position with a management consulting company or a jobwith an engineering firm.
