An upcoming Rutgers symposium will tackle two related topics, energy and climate change, with talks from leading researchers in those fields, including the chair and former chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

The Rutgers Energy Institute Energy Symposium will begin Wednesday, May 4, at 8:30 a.m., followed by the Energy Symposium from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Both will take place at the Rutgers Fiber Optics Auditorium, Busch Campus, 101 Bevier Road in Piscataway. Speakers include Hoesung Lee, chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change; Robert Watson, University of East Anglia, former IPCC Chair and former chief scientist at the World Bank; and many other experts.

The panel will discuss ways to “decarbonize the energy system,” focusing on a near-term agenda, economics and renewables. The afternoon program features distinguished Rutgers faculty contributors to the IPCC 5th Assessment Report who will discuss climate change risks, some of which society may continue to face despite efforts to reduce emissions, as well as the risks of geoengineering as a possible alternative solution. Finally, a panel of diverse New Jersey practitioners will discuss what the IPCC’s findings mean for them and how they are meeting the challenges of adapting to climate change.
