An Architecture Firm Redesigns Itself

The architecture firm Farewell Mills & Gatsch has broken into three new firms, two of which remain at FMG’s former location at 200 Forrestal Road.

Michael Farewell, former director of design at FMG, says the split occurred to allow that firm’s former partners the chance to concentrate on specific areas. Farewell Architects, a 12-person firm he operates with Lorine Murray-Mechini, will specialize in educational and institutional projects. Farewell earned his bachelor’s in architecture from Yale in 1975.

Michael Mills and former FMG partner Michael Schnoering have founded Mills+Schnoering Architects in the same office FMG occupied. the firm specializes in historic preservation.

Mills, a 25-year veteran of preservation, restoration, and adaptive use architecture, has designed some of the region’s most significant historic structures. He worked on the preservation and restoration of the New Jersey State House and State House Annex in Trenton, the Essex County Courthouse, and Princeton University Graduate College and its landmark Cleveland Tower.

Mills received his bachelor’s in architecture and urban planning from Princeton University and his master’s in historic preservation from Columbia.

Schnoering is overseeing the renovation of the Wheeler Opera House in Aspen, Colorado, and the Count Basie Theater in Red Bank. He also did the renovation work for Alton Auditorium at Richard Stockton College and the new 430-seat concert hall at Drew University. He earned his bachelor’s in architecture from NJIT.

Gatsch, who left FMG to start his own firm in 2009, provides consulting services to building owners on issues relating to architecture, infrastructure, sustainability, energy, owner representation, interior architecture and planning. He holds a bachelor’s in architecture from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University
