Allelix Leaves

E-mail: BarbaraFox@princetoninfo.com

The new owners of Allelix Neuroscience Inc. closed the

facility on Cedar Brook Drive in Cranbury on Friday, April 14.

Operations

will continue in Salt Lake City, Utah, where the new owner (MPS

Pharmaceuticals)

is based, and in Toronto, where the previous owner is. The firm will

be known as MPS Allelix. All 23 employees including the researchers

have been terminated; half left in January. In this job market, most

of those who wanted jobs have found jobs.

A division of Allelix Biopharmaceuticals, the company is involved

with the research and development of neuroscience therapeutics —

drugs of the central nervous system. Its drugs sought to block the

removal of neurotransmitters from the brain. The company opened

its New Jersey office in South Plainfield in April 1994 (U.S. 1, May

12-1999).

Formerly known as Trophix Pharmaceuticals, Allelix was formed around

the work coming out of the laboratory of Ira Black, a scientist at

the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. It hoped to

survive in the R&D marketplace without selling too many of the

research

treasures on the shelves.

William W. Crouse of Healthcare Ventures, based on Nassau Street,

was the early funder of the firm. When the IPO market for biotechs

began to dry up, HealthcareVentures sold it in 1997 to Allelix

Biopharmaceuticals,

a Toronto-based biopharmaceutical company.

The Cranbury-based laboratories specialize in therapies for the

central

nervous system and the brain. With Janssen Pharmaceutica it had been

developing products for schizophrenia and neuropathic pain — pain

that occurs when nerves are injured by cancer tumors, viral

infections,

or surgery. A third area of research: Trying to reduce abnormal

contractions

that cause muscle spasms in those suffering from spinal cord injury,

multiple sclerosis, stroke, or cerebral palsy.

Accordingto Dennis Washington, CEO of Morrison Knudsen, the price amounts tojust 3.l7 times operating earnings.Of the 14,000 workers employed by Raytheon Engineers & constructorsworldwide, 850 employees work at the Carnegie Center. Raytheon ranksin the top 25 corporate employers in the Princeton area. The Carnegie Center became the home of Raytheon’s regionalheadquartersand its energy-related business group starting in June 1997, the samemonth as the groundbreaking for Carnegie 510 (U.S. 1, January 8,1997).Though the projected number of jobs was 1,400, that many workers nevercame and, in fact, a small number were laid off two years ago. Neithercompany would comment on whether the Carnegie Center unit would bemoved or downsized. The Wall Street Journal has been reporting that investors continuallyurged Raytheon to sell this piece of the business. As thethird-largestmilitary contractor in the United States, most of Raytheon’s annualrevenue (about $20 billion) comes from defense products such as itswell-known guided missiles (the Gulf War’s Patriot). Founded in 1922,it went public in 1952.Raytheon Engineers & Constructors International had about $2.6 billionin revenues last year but took a first quarter loss. It has haddifficultiesrestraining costs on fixed-price contracts due to such problems aslabor strikes and bad weather. It serves clients in a wide variety of industries, including power, chemicals, steel, foods, pharmaceuticals, and infrastructure. It hasthree business units: Raytheon Service Company (an internalorganization),Cedarapids Inc. (which makes construction equipment for the roadbuildingindustry), and Raytheon Engineers & Constructors Inc (which won thecontract for New Jersey Transit’s light rail system between Hobokenand Bayonne). In addition to Princeton, other groups are located inHouston, Chicago, Iowa, Alabama, and New York City. With this purchase, which will double the company’s $2.25 billionsales, Morrison Knudsen aims to lead the heavy construction industryby leveraging Raytheon’s engineering skills with its own emphasison contract execution. For five of its outstanding contracts, Raytheonpromises to partially indemnify the buyer in the case of costoverruns, according to the Wall Street Journal.Raytheon Engineers & Constructors, 510 CarnegieCenter, Princeton 08540-5287. Lucent’s In-BandOn-Channel Digital Audio Broadcast system is supposed to enhancecurrentsystems for AM radio and bring FM radio up to near CD quality.Nassau airs three of its Princeton area stations from its headquarterson Alexander Road. Last month it did a merger involving $185 millionin stock with Aurora Communications, which has nine stations in NewYork and Connecticut.
