Princeton University radio station WPRB’s weekly “Classical Discoveries Goes Avant-Garde” airs its final show today, Wednesday, January 30, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The five-year-old program is hosted by musician and music educator Marvin Rosen (pictured) and features works and discussions with major and emerging composers dedicated to advancing music theories and practices.

It has been the only program of its kind in the region. The program follows Rosen’s weekly Classical Discoveries, broadcast Wednesday mornings, 5 to 11 a.m.

Classical Discoveries will continue.

When asked by e-mail about the program’s suspension notice posted on the WPRB website, Rosen responded that it was a management decision made by the student board that determines programming.

Rosen, who has volunteered for the station for 16 years, said, “I love to share my excitement about neglected new music.”

He added, “I am sad because it takes many years to build up listeners with the kind of music I play. Many of these will sadly be lost forever from WPRB.”

A review of programs included extended interviews with major American composer George Crumb and current Institute for Advanced Study artist in residence, composer Derek Bermel.

Some programs are available as archives on the WPRB website.

Rosen has noted on his blog that his involvement with the program has given him and the station “the opportunity to give support to younger composers.”

He also wrote, “I have a big excitement and passion for what I do, I am thankful that a station like WPRB exists.”
