Spring Arts Preview: Dancing Through the Season

McCarter Theater

Hubbard Street Dance Chicago has a 45-year history of engaging with top choreographers with an ever-evolving repertory of contemporary dance. The company makes a return trip to McCarter with new artistic director Linda-Denise Fisher-Harrell with a program that pays homage to the company’s journey and its founder, Lou Conte. $25 to $80. March 28.

Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, an all-male ballet company, performs in drag and en pointe to offer a comic take on the art of ballet. To celebrate its 50th anniversary season the company presents works from throughout its history. $25 to $110. April 17.

STOMP is an inventive and invigorating stage show that blends dance, music, and theater featuring eight performers and drawing sound from found objects including Zippo lighters, push brooms, wooden poles, hammer handles, garbage cans, and even the kitchen sink. Founded in London, Stomp has been based in New York City since the early 1990s. $25 to $75. June 7 and 8.

Dance for PD®: A Mark Morris Dance Group Program is an experiential panel led by David Leventhal, founding teacher and program director of Dance for PD that explores the intersection of music, dance, and Parkinson’s Disease. The event, part of Princeton University Concerts’ Healing with Music series, includes a performance by local Dance for PD® participants of adapted Mark Morris choreography, set to live music performed by cellist Joshua Roman. American Repertory Ballet

“Classic Beauty” features excerpts from two crown jewels of the classical ballet repertoire: Swan Lake Act II and Sleeping Beauty Act III. Swan Lake Act II takes audiences into the bewitching world of Odette, the swan princess, as she reveals her true form to Prince Siegfried. Sleeping Beauty Act III is a celebration of love and happiness, culminating in the wedding of Princess Aurora and Prince Désiré. New Brunswick Performing Arts Center, 11 Livingston Avenue, New Brunswick. $25 to $45. March 8 through 10.

“Of Swans and Variants” features an excerpt from Swan Lake Act II followed by a recently choreographed contemporary piece, “Variants,” from artistic director Ethan Stiefel. “Variants” is set to Brahms’ “Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, Op. 24.” Both the music and choreography consist of a set of 25 variations and a concluding fugue. McCarter Theater, 91 University Place, Princeton. April 4.

Stiefel’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” his first full-length ballet for the company, premiered in 2022 to sold out audiences. Set to Felix Mendelssohn’s iconic score with additional music written for film by Erich Wolfgang Korngold, the production transports audiences to a fantastical forest filled with fairies, elves, mischief, romance, joy, and love. New Brunswick Performing Arts Center, 11 Livingston Avenue, New Brunswick. $25 to $45. May 10 through 12.

Roxey Ballet

The New Hope-based dance company led by Mark Roxey presents “Carmen,” a one-act contemporary masterpiece full of passion and betrayal that tells the sensual tale of the fabled temptress of Seville. $49. February 24 through March 3.

State Theater New Jersey

Shen Yun takes audiences on a journey through China’s 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture through classical Chinese dance, live orchestral music, and interactive backdrops. Revisit a time when scholars and artists sought harmony with the Tao, or the “Way” of the universe, and when divine beings walked upon the earth to inspire humanity. $80 to $200. March 28 through 31.

Kelsey Theater

The Mercer Dance Ensemble, a group of Mercer County Community College’s students, staff, faculty, and alumni, plus guest choreographers and dancers come together to tell their stories, sway your emotions, and weave a spell with their music and movement. $22. May 11 and 12.

Grand Kyiv Ballet presents “Giselle,” showcasing the talents of principal dancers Kateryna Kukhar and Oleksandr Stoianov, both hailing from the National Opera of Ukraine but currently based in Seattle. The ballet recounts the tale of Giselle and the Willis, young unmarried girls betrayed by their lovers who meet their untimely demise. A portion of the proceeds from this event benefit renovation efforts at the Kyiv State Choreographic College. $34 to $79. March 2.
