Internationally acclaimed opera singer Jonas Kaufmann brings an evening of art songs to McCarter Theater, Thursday, January 17, 7:30 p.m. The German-born tenor has performed La Scala, Vienna State Opera, Salzburg Festival, London’s Royal Opera, and the Metropolitan Opera, where he will perform “Parsifal” in February.

McCarter’s William Lockwood says, “Jonas is doing only two recitals in the US this season (Vail and McCarter) before he starts rehearsals for the new ‘Parsifal’ at the Met. The impressive thing about him is that unlike so many opera singers, he does not merely sing operatic arias to piano accompaniment in his recitals; that would be too easy. He is a serious singer of art songs and lieder, and at his Met recital last year there were songs by Liszt, Mahler, DuParc, and Strauss — not a whiff of opera, which is one of the things that distinguishes him from other great opera artists.” At McCarter, Kaufmann will sing Schubert’s quintessential song cycle, “Die schoene Mullerin,” which he will sing with his longtime accompanist, pianist Helmut Deutsch.

McCarter Theater is 91 University Place, Princeton, tickets are $48 through $68 and may be purchased at www.mccarter.org or by phone at 609-258-2787.
