When Connie Gering wanted to add something fresh to the New Hope Arts and Crafts Festival, she looked to the past. Specifically, she looked toward John Larsen of John and Peter’s (with her in the photo above).
Larsen and his late wife, Robin, helped develop the first Arts and Crafts festival 20 years ago. Robin founded the New Hope Arts Center and, Gering said, is known for “inspiring our artistic community and bringing it to new, creative heights.”
“As soon as I discovered from John’s stories that Robin really was the creative spirit behind this festival, I gained not only a deeper appreciation for the festival but inspiration for our artists as well,” she said.
Gering was looking to increase the artistic experience of the festival by searching for new judges within the New Hope art community, adding to the existing volunteer base, and initiating other fresh and innovative ideas, which John helped her discover through stories and memories of Robin.
Artists are encouraged to submit their work through Sunday, August 25. Artists are pre-screened and selected through a formal process by the Chamber Arts and Crafts Festival committee. This year, more than 220 local and out-of-state artists will present their oil paintings, watercolors, pastels, sculptures, photography, jewelry, ceramics, glass and wood works, and unique drawings.
The judges will select first, second, and third-prize winners for the categories fine art, photography, crafts, and jewelry. A “Best in Show” winner will also be chosen. More than $3,000 in prize money will be awarded.
Visitors to the festival can expect the best of visual and performing arts, and guests may dance to the live music. A food court will offer a variety of treats, and a complimentary shuttle service will run from the festival grounds to New Hope’s Main Street.
