The New Jersey International Film Festival Summer at Rutgers University in New Brunswick gets on its way on Friday, June 1, and continues Fridays through Sundays through June 10.
Included in the series of New Jersey or area premieres are several short and feature-length films with distinctively New Jersey ties. On Saturday, June 2, there’s the screening of “The Wrestler: A Q.T. Marshall Story,” Toms River filmmaker Frank Zarillo’s documentary about an aging wrestler’s last shot of making it into the World Wresting Entertainment network.
On Sunday, June 3, there’s “306 Hollywood,” about a family’s anthropological exploration of their deceased grandmother’s Hillside, New Jersey, home.
On Friday, June 8, there are the showings of “Conflict,” Long Branch-based psychologist and filmmaker Barbara Holstein’s portrait of a teen-age girl; “Mr. Jim,” Monmouth County director Jack Foley’s story of a widowed veteran finding hope in a chance encounter; and “Shellfish,” Point Pleasant Beach director and veteran JD Wilson’s science fiction satire about compulsive and tech device obsessed millennials.
And on Saturday, June 9, there is the feature “MDMA,” Los Angeles director Angie Wang’s true story of a young Newark woman who loses her university scholarship and starts manufacturing the drug ecstasy to pay her bills. Filmmakers or cast members of all the NJ films will be on hand for a question and answer session.
