The Garden Theater in Princeton’s Talk Cinema series continues on Saturday, December 12, with the monthly sneak previews of award-winning independent and foreign films selected by noted film critic Harlan Jacobson, pictured at right.

The DCP (Digital Cinema Package) series is part of a growing list of Garden Theater events using live digital feeds and digital broadcasts. Other “live” events include the National Theater Live from England.

The Talk Cinema format includes a “surprise” 12:30 p.m. screening bookended by live introductions and post-viewing discussions with film critics and industry professionals.

Coordinators say the sessions are designed to let audience members “be among the first to see a new movie” in “the way critics and industry insiders get to do at film festivals.” The host typically speaks for 15 minutes or so to provide context for the film. The audience can then ask question and often can speak via Skype with a member of the production.

The company was co-founded in 1992 by Harlan and Susan Jacobson, who coordinate the presentations at 12 U.S. locations including Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Minneapolis, New York’s Lincoln Center, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC.

Harlan Jacobson has written about entertainment and film for Variety, New York Times, Washington Post, and others.

The Garden Theater is owned by Princeton University and since 2014 has been operated by the nonprofit Renew Theater, a film presentation company based in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. The theater shows a combination of first run films, classic screenings, family films, and special showings of independent films.

Talk Cinema tickets are available on a subscription and individual basis. Pro-rated season subscription passes for the remaining seven sneak preview dates are $118 general, $108 for Garden Theater members, and $60 for students.

Individual tickets are $22 general admission and $11 student, available only on the day of the screening and subject to availability.
