The Princeton Public Library hosts the annual Phyllis Marchand Leadership Lecture on Thursday, March 19, featuring Princeton University astrophysicist and prison education advocate Jenny Greene, along with a special performance by the Princeton Girlchoir.
The event begins at 6:30 p.m. in the library’s Community Room, with doors opening at 6:15 p.m. It is free and open to the public.
In a program titled “The Out of This World and Down to Earth Work of Jenny Greene,” Greene explores her dual impact in astrophysics and social advocacy. A faculty member at Princeton since 2011, Greene is known for her research on supermassive black holes and their host galaxies. She earned her undergraduate degree from Yale University and a doctorate from Harvard University.
In addition to her scientific work, Greene co-founded the Prison Teaching Initiative, which provides college-level education to incarcerated individuals in New Jersey correctional facilities while offering Princeton undergraduates hands-on teaching experience. During the lecture, Greene will discuss how she has navigated both fields.
The evening will open with a performance by the Princeton Girlchoir’s Ensemble from Westrick Music Academy, featuring approximately 20 singers. The selections will celebrate Women’s History Month.
The Marchand Lecture is an annual event honoring the legacy of former Princeton Township Mayor Phyllis Marchand, who served 22 years on the township committee, including 14 as mayor, before her death in 2021. The lecture series reflects her commitment to fostering women’s leadership and community engagement.
Following the performance at 6:30 p.m., Greene is scheduled to speak at 7:15 p.m. The program will conclude with refreshments and an opportunity for attendees to mingle.
The event will be held in person only, with a recording to be posted on the library’s YouTube channel within a week.
