A One-of-a-Kind Circus Comes to Town

The big top remains as a cherished item of nostalgia, but many circus lovers have already transferred their affection to the marvels of visual artistry created by a new generation of razzle dazzle entertainers. One such family show, Cirque Eloize, arrives at McCarter Theater on Friday, January 16 for a three-day engagement.

Born in Canada, Cirque Eloize ingeniously blends circus arts and performing arts to create expressions of melancholy, joy, and love. Interwoven with whimsy, music, and thrilling circus acts, the result is a one-of-a-kind theatrical experience.

Cirque Eloize’s current show, “Nomade,” is designed to recreate the atmosphere of a roving Gypsy caravan, where the adventures and human relationships between its colorful characters unfold against the magical backdrop of a nighttime carnival. The show stars circus artists from across the globe who create colorful characters at the same time performing heart-stopping feats of skill with the help of high and low-tech equipment and props.

Cirque Eloize is named for the flashes of heat lightning seen on the horizon off the Magdalen islands off the coast of Quebec. An inspiration for the troupe’s seven founding members, this lightning symbolizes the heat and energy that feed the company’s spirit. Founded nine years ago, the company has given more than 1,000 performances in over 200 cities and 20 countries to audiences of more than two million spectators. While audiences hunger for theater that engages all the senses, performing artists also hunger for the chance to meet challenges and excel. The company currently employs more than 100 artists in two separate international traveling productions.

Cirque Eloize, McCarter Theater, 91 University Place, 609-258-2787. $31 to $37. Friday, January 16, 7 p.m., Saturday, January 17, 7 p.m., and Sunday, January 18, 2 p.m.
