Talking once with a wealthy Princetonian

(So hard I’m trying to think of the words)

she was

Certainly, truly not being a phonian- (One-two-three trying to think of the

words)

Make mention, I did, of the rich or the

wealthy-

(But Jesus, I’m trying to think of the

words)

She gave me a gentle look, really not

stealthy

(I’m simply unable to think of the words)

And said kindly, generously, “We prefer”

(Suddenly, now, I remember the words)

“To think of ourselves as Financially

Advantaged.”

(A wince and a sigh, I remembered the

words)

If she should remember this, truly I’m

dead, Fred

(Please tie me kangaroo down to the

word)

She won’t say a thing, but just hand me

my head, Fred

(When in Rome or in Princeton, better

seen and not heard)

— George Dabrowski

Dabrowski worked on the Dinky on and off for a few years in the ’90s, is retired and currently tortures the piano on weekends at Trenton’s Ellarslie Art Museum in Cadwalader Park in West Trenton.
