Reuters has reported that the Danish pharma giant is eliminating 100 back-office jobs at its U.S. headquarters on Scudders Mill Road, part of a workforce reduction that will eliminate 250 jobs at the company overall.

A week earlier, the company announced it would cut 400 R&D employees in Denmark and China. Novo Nordisk had 42,682 workers according to its 2017 annual report.

“[Novo Nordisk] is ensuring the company is positioned to achieve long-term, sustainable growth in the face of pricing and competitive pressures in the U.S. Equally important is our need to invest in our current and future portfolio that will continue bringing innovation to patients,” the company said in a statement to reporters.

In another statement, the company said the most recent round of layoffs is “taking place in order to put resources in the rollout of Ozempic (semaglutide injection) in the U.S. and later oral semaglutide.”

“We regret that valued employees who have made significant contributions will be leaving the organization,” Novo Nordisk stated. “Support and resources will be made available throughout this process and those affected will be given an opportunity to apply for open positions prior to leaving the organization.”
