In the 1970s, Bob Woodward’s reporting brought down one corrupt president. In his latest book, “Fear: Trump in the White House,” published this September, Woodward painted a picture of a delusional and incompetent president, whom his own top aides described as an “idiot,” “unhinged,” with “The understanding of a fifth or sixth grader,” a “liar” and a criminal.
If Woodward’s revelations failed to have a cataclysmic impact on Trump’s presidency, it’s only because these personality traits of Trump were already widely known by the time his book came out. Nevertheless, Woodward’s reporting earned critical praise. George Packer of the New Yorker said it belongs on a shelf with “the literature of mad kings.”
