Mercer County Community College president Jianping Wang is emphasizing the teaching of practical skills, and several new courses at the college’s Center for Continuing Studies are a good example of this. The center, which offers a variety of certificate courses aimed at practicing professionals, including classes in nursing and highway construction, will host an open house on Thursday, September 8, at 6:30 p.m. in the conference center at Mercer, 1200 Old Trenton Road, West Windsor. The open house is aimed at people interested in exploring career development options in healthcare, high-tech fields, and other areas. Free. To register, call 609-570-3311. New this fall are expanded offerings in civil engineering, ideal for professional development or for those looking for additional certifications. Classes include pavement design basics, pavement rehabilitation methods, and pavement preservation and maintenance, as well as National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technology highway construction courses. CCS is one of only two test sites in New Jersey to offer NICET testing.

“Licensed designers and engineers have always been critical to any public works project, but it is becoming increasingly common for cities and governmental entities to demand even higher standards,” says Michael Edmondson, CCS director. “This has made additional certifications important, and we are pleased to respond to this demand with more offerings for the engineering professional.”

In addition to pavement design courses, CCS will also offer construction math, a 10-hour occupational safety and health administration construction training course, and a pervious concrete certification program in spring, 2017.

CCS continues to offer numerous programs in the allied health field, including the certified nurse aide and certified home health aide programs, offered on MCCC’s West Windsor campus and the James Kerney campus in Trenton. Additionally, CCS offers a certificate in medical billing and coding, a pharmacy technician certification prep program, and a veterinary assistant certificate program.
