Holiday Cards
HomeFront, the non-profit agency that helps local impoverished families get back on their feet, has launched its annual holiday card fundraiser. The HomeFront ArtSpace therapeutic art program for homeless moms living at the Family Preservation Center shelter in Ewing has discovered hidden talent, by creating an avenue of self-expression and empowerment through art.
“The unique perspective and history of the artists shines through in their work,” says Ruthann Traylor, director of ArtSpace. “That makes these notecards and holiday cards something very personal and powerful. The women who created these cards can’t believe their work is part of a product that people buy. It helps them build the self-esteem they need to move forward.”
This year’s holiday card assortment, “Home for the Holidays,” come eight to a box, two of each design, and are available for a $12 donation or $20 for two boxes. Audition
Yardley Players Theater Company has auditions for “Peter Pan,” on Saturday and Sunday, November 16 and 17, from noon to 4 p.m., at Mercer Community College in West Windsor. Prepare a song from the show (an accompanist will be provided), be ready to participate in a group dance audition, and be ready to read from the script. The roles of Peter Pan and Mrs. Darling have already been cast.
Some roles require that the actors fly using a harness system. All actors playing these roles are required to have two responsible people that they designate to fly them. These people must be able to attend all technical rehearsals as well as all of the performances. For Young Musicians
Sinfonietta Nova invites young musicians to compete in the Youth Concerto Competition. Open to New Jersey residents under the age of 18 and open to all orchestral instruments, excluding piano. Written application must be postmarked by Friday, October 18, and include a non-refundable application fee of $45. A YouTube or video recording of the applicant must be submitted to auditions@sinfoniettanova.org by Friday, November 8. The selection shall be a work for solo instrument with orchestra, and shall not exceed 20 minutes in length. All selections must have an orchestral accompaniment available. Visit sinfoniettanova.org.
For Choreographers
Rider University’s Westminster College of the Arts invites emerging choreographers for ballet and contemporary dance to participate in an emerging choreographers competition and showcase at Rider.
The competition is open to any emerging choreographer who is a United States citizen or resident. There is no age limit, but he/she should be in the early stages of his/her professional career. Choreographers interested in participating should submit a six-minute video of a work set on a minimum of three dancers. Videos will be reviewed by a four-person panel that includes dancer Edward Villella.
Semi-finalists, who will be selected from the video submissions, will be invited to perform their works in person for the panel at Rider on Saturday, January 18. The panel will select five finalists, who will perform their completed works in a showcase on Saturday, May 3, at 7:30 p.m. in the Bart Luedeke Theater on the Rider University campus in Lawrenceville.

Road Trip
Princeton Elks Veteran’s Committee is sponsoring Operation Appreciation 2013 to recognize the service of our local military veterans. Forty local veterans and their families will be guests of the Elks for a day long event to be held at the United States Military Academy at West Point on Saturday, November 9. Attendance is open to members of the community.
A bus leaves the lodge at 6:30 a.m. Activities at West Point include a full dress military cadet parade and a pre-game tailgate party prior to attending the West Point vs. Western Kentucky football game. $90 includes coach transportation, a tailgate lunch, and an afternoon of football.
