Amazon will open a 1 million-square-foot fulfillment center in Robbinsville in Matrix Business Park, the online retailer announced January 8.
KTR Capital Partners, a private equity firm headquartered in Manhattan, is building the project with Amazon, who is planning to take occupancy in early 2014. The project is expected to create 700 full-time jobs and generate some $22 million in tax revenues. The warehouse is the first of two 1-million-square-foot facilities Amazon has committed to building in the state.
“Amazon’s multi-million dollar investment in this one facility alone is expected to result in the creation of hundreds of full-time jobs in addition to temporary, seasonal, and construction jobs,” said Governor Chris Christie.
“Amazon’s decision to move to Mercer County is a prime indicator of the value of this central New Jersey region,” said Mercer County Executive Brian Hughes. “Amazon is forecasting hiring for hundreds of positions, and I’m confident they will find hardworking, desirable candidates for those jobs right here in Mercer County.”
The facility is part of a deal between the state and Amazon reached last year under which Amazon agreed to twin 1-million-square foot distribution centers in exchange for the retailer starting to charge 7 percent state sales tax on purchases by July 1. The deal also included tax incentives for Amazon awarded by the state Economic Development Authority.
