Winter landscapes are beautiful, and can be enjoyed tremendously with a little preparation in the fall. Here are some tips that can prevent damage to your property, and will help to keep you safe and comfortable over the next several months.

It is time to: replace smoke detector batteries, furnace filters, clean humidifier filters, and check water heaters for leaking or rust. Flashlights should have fresh batteries and candles and matches or lighters placed where they would be easy to find.

This is the best time to purchase ice melt salt, ice scrapers and a new shovel, if needed. Have your fireplace inspected and cleaned before your first fire of the season. Have sprinkler systems winterized as well as outdoor faucets.

If you leave your property vacant be sure to leave adequate heat on in the house or call a plumber to winterize your home.

Be sure to remove or secure bird feeders, outdoor furniture, and check the latches on fence gates. As the leaves fall off the trees, any dead limbs that look as though they might fall in high winds should be removed.

When switching to winter gear, if there are coats in good conditionthat you will not be using, please let us know. We will pick them up, or you can drop them at our office at 10 Nassau Street between November 1 and 15. We will be sure to donate them to someone in need.

Any questions, call Ingela, Susan or Kathy. Our team is your neighbor.
