The Artful Eye: Working in Watercolor

I like the effects that watercolor provides. It is said that it’s not an easy medium to handle, and yet once you understand the application of water and its relationship with the different pigments and papers it starts to make sense. It’s the perfect medium for landscapes. If you stick to a relatively limited palette you will learn how to create harmony within your pictures.

I strive for mood, atmosphere, and lighting in a landscape whenever I can. I started by painting local scenes where I live but realized that this would limit my ability to grow as an artist so I have branched out into more complex themes such as the 48 piece exhibit called “ A Journey through Britain in Watercolor.”

— Daniel P. Turner Thomas

Editor’s note: Thomas’ exhibit opens at the Gourgaud Gallery in Cranbury’s Town Hall with a reception on Sunday, May 6, from 1 to 3 p.m. The exhibit runs through Monday, May 28.
