Sensus: Fat-Free & Growing Nicely

Sensus America LLC, the U.S. arm of the Dutch food science technology company, has moved from 1 Deer Park Drive in South Brunswick to Lenox Drive in Lawrenceville.

Based in Rosendaal, the Netherlands, the firm moved its U.S. headquarters from Texas in 2002 and spent a little more than six years on Deer Park Drive. There, the firm refined its products, which revolve around the fiber inulin, chiefly Frutafit inulin products that can substitute for trans-fats and hydrogenated oils. According to the company, Fruitafit inulin forms a creamy, fat-like structure when combined with water, effectively making a healthful replacement for common fats found in processed foods. One product, in fact, can be used in fat-free spread technology for margarines and baked goods.

Sensus derives its inulin mainly from chicory, which is grown in England. The FDA approved inulin years ago, saying the ingredient was safe for use as a water binder, emulsifier, stabilizer, and texturizer in non-standardized meat food products. Combined with gelatin and starch, it improves what is called “mouth feel” and stabilizes emulsions.

On labels the inulin is sometimes referred to as “Fos” or “dietary fiber.”

Carol Brown, marketing director, said that Sensus moved because as the quest for more nutritious alternatives to fats has grown, so has the company. “We just needed a bigger space.”
