The Brahms German Requiem takes on a whole new meaning at Princeton Pro Musica’s Sunday, March 19 concert at Richardson Auditiorium. For this concert, with its prayers for the departed, the program booklet will include a Remembernace Page in the concert program listing the names of family and friends who have died.
Director Frances Fowler Slade says: “I think this is simply the greatest piece of music there is. When I was starting out, I would whisper that sentence. Now, with years of experience, I will stand firm and say it out loud.”
The concert will feature soloists Rochelle Ellis and Elem Eley.
The dictionary defines requiem as a mass for the rest of the soul of the dead. Brahms’ German Requiem was first performed before an audience of 2,500 people in Bremen Cathedral on Good Friday, 1868, conducted by Brahms himself.
