Expanding Efforts to Serve the Latino Community

United Way of Greater Mercer County (UWGMC) works to ensure families have the resources they need to get ahead. At the core of their mission is their commitment to equity. UWGMC has recently embarked on a new program to serve the Latino community.

The United Way Greater Mercer County Federal Tax Clinic (Low Income Tax Clinic, LITC) provides informational workshops in Spanish to low- and moderate-income individuals and families on their rights and responsibilities as taxpayers. Topics may include learning more about the tax return process, IRS notices, tax debt, tax audits and ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number).

UWGMC has been offering free tax preparation for over 10 years, and they have identified a need in providing more information on tax related topics to help the Latino community understand more about tax filing and how to navigate a tax issue they may be encountering. This can open the door for individuals and families to be able to get ahead financially and in some cases assist them in their pathway to U.S. citizenship. UWGMC will be offering tax workshops at different locations in the county and virtually as well.

UWGMC President and CEO Sandra Toussaint said, “We are excited to expand our efforts to create opportunities for struggling families to get what they need to stabilize and thrive.”

“We have identified a need in the Latino population to be better informed about tax related topics and therefore made it a priority to provide this service to help individuals improve their tax situations or learn more about how to begin the tax filing process,” said Jessica Figueroa, UWGMC’s Director of Economic Mobility Initiatives.
