Real Life Resumes

It’s a peculiar sort of thing

how real life resumes

it doesn’t stop

so you can catch your breath

it doesn’t pause

so you can finish sewing your heart back together

you can’t rewind

to that night that you thought you figured it all out

you can’t fast forward

through the mountains

you can’t repeat

that perfect kiss

real life resumes

It doesn’t stop

so you can save up your change

it doesn’t pause

so you can finish writing the next great American novel

you can’t rewind

to the moment you learned how to lie

you can’t fast forward

through the forest you got lost in

you can’t repeat

the morning that filled you with love

real life resumes
