When Benton Camper’s father and mother created Nassau Tennis Club 40 years ago, they started something big: a facility that has remained family run throughout the years to give the very best to its members and guests.
“We take great pride in investing in this club,” Camper, now the organization’s president, said. “The courts are in great shape. We regularly maintain the lighting, buildings and grounds. This is ‘home’ for a lot of area tennis players.”
Another area of pride: focusing on adults who haven’t played before or haven’t played in a long time. Nassau Tennis Club offers classes specifically for them so they can develop and/or grow a love of tennis. There’s an introductory class that accelerates people’s ability to enjoy the game, and even a free trial class.
“Our goal is to have people hitting and having fun the first time out,” Camper explained.
Nassau Tennis Club has 10 indoor courts and five outdoor courts, which means plenty of room for lessons, games, teams and leagues. Lessons are offered for pee wee up to high-performance. In fact, there are four courts dedicated to training available seven days a week to accommodate kids looking to play in competitive, sectional and national tournaments.
“During the day, we have courts earmarked for our competitive ladies teams,” Camper added. “They play other teams and other clubs on a regular schedule. We also have our own leagues, generally in-house members who like to mix and match and meet new people.”
In fact, a fun and free way to meet and play new people is an old idea that’s new again: the tennis ladder. This time, it’s online, and ranks players by results so those looking for a challenge can “play up.”
With summer coming, attention also turns to camps. Nearly 100 kids each week go through Nassau Tennis Club’s summer camps, which still are accepting reservations. There are full and half-day camps, daily rates, and before and after care available for Junior Tennis & Sports and Tournament Tough camps.
“You don’t need to be a member to enroll in camp, take classes or play,” Camper said. “But membership is inexpensive and offers great discounts.”
