In 1915, there was no such thing as an iPhone or a Blackberry. However, the principals of Borden Perlman would argue their forefathers were the first to use a mobile phone. And they’ll guarantee you that they did so, proudly, in downtown Trenton, New Jersey.
“My grandfather, Bill Borden, most definitely had a ‘mobile’ phone, and he considered it a ‘smart’ phone,” laughs Doug Borden. “It was the one he passed back and forth to his friend, George Perlman, with whom he shared an office. They shared the phone, too, because times were that tight.”
“True story…” adds Jeff Perlman, George’s great nephew, “and by sharing expenses and experiences they became very good friends, starting a personal and commercial insurance business that has now spanned 95 years and three generations.”
With the patriarchal “grandfather and great uncle, to nephew and son, to fathers-and-sons” legacy in mind — as well as few archived records to prove the actual start-up date of their initial joint business venture — Doug Borden and Jeff Perlman have chosen the month of June, 2010, and Father’s Day in particular, to celebrate the 95-year success of Borden Perlman, and to thank their clients and communities.
With a strong history in the Trenton area, and earned respect within the Princeton communities, Borden Perlman finds itself perfectly located on Lenox Drive in Lawrenceville, NJ, midway between its strongest supporters. Recognized as an expert in commercial, personal and sports accident insurance, the firm is licensed in all 48 continental states and manages risk on a global scale, with clients as far away as London and Hong Kong.
Borden Perlman has a growing list of account executives, including Kelly Myers, who in 1990 started its third business component, a nationwide sports accident insurance program. The account execs are supported by a trained and knowledgeable staff, many of whom have been with the firm their entire careers. This solid corporate structure addresses requests quickly and efficiently, because decision makers are always within reach.
“Jeffrey and Doug have grown the company to more than 6,000 clients,” says Richard Perlman, who has recently handed the management duties of Borden Perlman’s personal lines department to Sarah Willard Cammerzell, but agreed to remain in an emeritus position. “Their integrity is unmatched, and their eye-to-eye commitment continues to attract those looking to place their risk management with a trusted partner.”
The Borden Perlman story is opening a new chapter with the launch of its newly-designed web site at www.bordenperlman.com. The new site features multi-media advancements including a company video, a library of insurance-related educational films, and a question-and-answer “avatar,” hosted by the likes of Albert Einstein.
“Insurance is a competitive business,” says Borden, “but wise people know to shop it comparatively.”
“So with everything being relative, physically and figuratively, Einstein was the perfect choice,” smiles Jeff Perlman.
