I am a member of the YWCA Princeton NEXT GEN Board and wanted to make you aware of a wonderful, free career development opportunity for young professional women. Attracting younger members is becoming a pressing issue in the nonprofit sector as an increasing number of their board members are retiring. This YWCA Princeton program aims to solve this problem and give young women valuable experience that will serve them well in both the nonprofit or corporate sector.
The YWCA Princeton serves the greater Mercer County area through numerous programs and events, all aimed at advancing the mission of eliminating racism and empowering women. Nearly three years ago the YWCA Princeton developed the NEXT GEN Board: a diverse, self-governing board for young women ages 21 to 34. This board opens up an opportunity for the area’s young professional women to experience board service, receive mentoring by influential community leaders for career enhancement, and develop their own leadership skills in a safe environment.
Meetings are held the second Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the YWCA. Members also participate in social outings such as bowling and movie nights. It’s a great way to meet new people and make friends, especially for those who have recently moved to the area.
Since its inception the NEXT GEN Board has positively affected the lives and careers of dozens of its members. It has expanded networks and created connections across industries, given opportunities to expand skill sets in new ways and provided a chance for free professional development to many. Our board committee activities allow members to practice new skills or enhance existing ones; skills which improve day-to-day performance in their day jobs.
